Nick Riemer, candidate for Academic Vice President, University of Sydney branch of the NTEU

I am running in these elections because I am committed to the essential role of unionism in university work and would like to continue contributing to it. Collective action through the NTEU is the only way to defend staff and safeguard the university’s vital social function of the pursuit and democratisation of knowledge.

My vision is of a vibrant, comradely, inclusive union branch characterized by high levels of member involvement, democratic decision-making, and creative solidarity between academic and professional staff that does not stop at the boundaries of the workplace. If elected back into a leadership position, I will inform my work with the experience and campaigning skills I have accumulated over many years, most recently as branch president. I am committed to defending the autonomy and security of academic work against the managerial and political pressures to which it is continually subject, with workload, decasualisation, academic freedom and staff control over decision-making as particular priorities.

If elected, I commit to working hard to strengthen the NTEU and to harnessing the power of collective action to pursue justice in and beyond the workplace. I’m running with colleagues who share these principles on the Rank And File Action ticket, http://rafausyd.com.
